Why Does Farming Need To Be Profitable?

There are many reasons why farms of every size must be profitable, this is especially important for small scale market gardeners like me.

Some of the main reasons...

1. The first and most important factor is that a farm is only sustainable into the future if it can be profitable. It takes a lot of work to start a farm...to build soils to grow plants, and to establish regenerative systems to preserve agricultural land from real estate development.

2.Local farms are the backbone of our local food sovereignty ... it is so important for these farms to continue into the future, producing our high quality, FRESH local foods & flowers regeneratively, and organically...and of course supporting new farms to be started.

3. If you only have a small area of land (1 Acre), then it is logical to grow the most profitable and high value crops that you can - taking into account supply and demand in your local markets.

4. Being a Farmer is a highly skilled vocation and needs to provide a sustainable income to support themselves, and their families...farmers have all the same financial requirements as other professions...as we grow our farms, the farms grow our farmers too :)

5. Its much more fun being a farmer when you know you are profitable…we already need to contend changing weather patterns in our line of work.
